How do bees breathe?

Humble Bee

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Bees don't breathe in air via their mouths!

Imagine it like a little Jet, takes air in and expels it from the back, weather this effects flight speed we dont know but it's incredible!

They intake air via the thorax spiracle and expell it via the abdomen spiracle on the side of the bee!

Oxygen is vacuumed into the body through openings on each segment (spiracles) by the expansion of the air sacs, then the spiracles are closed and air sacs are compressed to force the air into smaller tracheas, which become smaller and smaller until individual tubules reach individual cells.

Honey bees actually have a dry respiratory system unlike humans wet system.
